Former Liverpool star Luis Garcia has talked up the importance of a return to the Champions League next season.

The Reds had designs on chasing Chelsea at the top of the Premier League prior to a deeply disappointing start to the year that saw them win just one in 10 in all competitions.

The 2-0 win over Tottenham back on February 11 was the Reds’ first win in the Premier League since New Year’s Eve, and expectations have largely been revised since the stuttering run of form.

The win over Spurs was a return to the swashbuckling form that was so evident in the first few months of the campaign however, and Champions League winner Garcia hopes that Jurgen Klopp’s side can maintain that level for the remainder of the season.

The Spaniard told LFC World: «We still have to think [about] getting the top four.

«At the beginning of the season we were talking about that [but] Liverpool arrived to fourth place, third place, and suddenly we realised that they would have a chance to win the trophy and we started changing our [aim].

«Even though we have struggled in 2017 with a few of the results, the team is getting back on its feet with a fantastic result against Tottenham.

«We have to continue [thinking] about bringing Champions League back to Anfield.

«If something bigger arrives, that’s fantastic, but the most important [thing] is to bring the team back to play in those important games in the Champions League.»

Jurgen Klopp’s side play their first game in 16 days when they travel to champions Leicester on Monday, and the Reds will be keen to heap more misery on a side that has struggled throughout much of the campaign.

However, the Foxes put up a spirited performance away to Sevilla on Wednesday, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie in Spain.
